The dark, top-fermented Altbier is Düsseldorf's liquid emblem and is poured fresh in the tradition-steeped house breweries of the Old Town. The Köbesse, as the waiters are called, often refill your glass unasked as long as you do not lay your beer mat across the top. This Rhenish drinking culture is more than a matter of taste: it is living tradition and part of the Düsseldorf identity, best experienced right at the counter.
Tips for your visit
The Old Town is loveliest explored on foot, letting yourself drift through the lanes and trying the Altbier in several brewhouses. By day it is quieter and good for browsing and a spot of lunch, while in the evening and at weekends the streets fill with revellers. From the market square and Burgplatz it is just a stone's throw to the Rhine promenade, so a riverside walk follows on perfectly.
